How Sales Tax Works for Small Businesses

If you sell taxable goods or services, you are generally required to collect sales tax from your customers and send it to your state's tax authority on a regular schedule. The frequency depends on your sales volume. High volume sellers may file monthly, while smaller businesses often file quarterly or annually.

As a seller, you do not keep the sales tax you collect. It is money you hold temporarily on behalf of the state. Failing to collect or remit sales tax when required can result in penalties and interest charges.

Not everything is taxable in every state. Many states exempt groceries, prescription medications, and certain clothing from sales tax. The rules vary widely, so check your specific state's department of revenue website for a list of exempt items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which states have no sales tax?
Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local municipalities to charge their own sales tax, so some areas in Alaska do collect it.
What is the highest sales tax state?
Louisiana has the highest combined state and average local sales tax rate in the country at over 9.5 percent. California has the highest state base rate at 7.25 percent. When local taxes are added, rates in some California cities can exceed 10 percent.
Do I need to charge sales tax for online sales?
If you have economic nexus in a state, you must collect and remit sales tax on sales to customers in that state. Since the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court decision, most states require out of state sellers to collect tax once they exceed a certain sales threshold, typically $100,000 in revenue or 200 transactions per year in that state.
Are local taxes included in this calculator?
This calculator shows the base state sales tax rate only. Many cities and counties add their own local taxes on top of the state rate. Your actual rate at the register may be higher. Check your local government website for the combined rate in your area.
